How Sinn Fein Ignited the Irish Election (But Won’t Win) 

Long an outsider in Irish politics because of its links with the Irish Republican Army, Sinn Fein is moving center stage. Just days before a Feb. 8 general election, the party surged ahead of Prime Minister Leo Varadkar’s Fine Gael and main opposition party Fianna Fail in the most recent poll. While it cannot win enough seats for a majority and may not even get a voice in government, Sinn Fein is making a mark with voters by capitalizing on discontent over housing shortages and health care.
